Thomas Cook to shut 13 shops

Thomas Cook is to close 13 retail stores, putting more than 70 jobs at risk.

A 30-day consultation has begun with the shop staff.

A spokeswoman said the closures were part of the review of the retail network announced at the time of the joint venture. The company said last year that it planned to close 115 stores, but a total of up to 200 are at risk over the next two years.

Ian Ailles, Thomas Cook UK mainstream chief executive and chairman of the joint venture, said: “We can confirm that, as part of our business-as-usual review of our retail stores and as part of the previous announcement made in December 2011, we’re proposing to close a small number of stores and are now undertaking 30 days consultation with our colleagues.

“As the UK’s leading high street travel retailer, our stores are a popular way for customers to book with us and are an essential part of our multi-channel approach alongside our websites and sales centres.”
