North Yorkshire-based developer Oakgate has signed John Lewis Partnership for a 100,000-sq ft department store. It will be John Lewis’s first out of town department store of this type.

John Lewis will trade alongside a new 120,000-sq ft Marks & Spencer store, a further 45,000-sq ft unit which is under offer to another major UK brand, smaller kiosks and restaurant units and a range of community facilities, including a new 6,000-seat community stadium.

Lawrence Earnshaw, senior director out-of-town retail at letting agent CBRE, said: “The delivery of retailers such as John Lewis and Marks and Spencer, will provide a much-needed and exciting addition to the city, significantly strengthening the retail offering for the people of York. This significant investment will add to an increasingly strong retail market, not to mention the long-term future of York.”
